Mariazell Railway
Through the nature park on narrow tracks
The Mariazell Railway climbs more than 600 metres in altitude from St. Pölten to the crest of its route on over 900 metres above sea level. In the ruggedly picturesque Ötscher area, elegant viaducts alternate with rock tunnels. On the way to Mariazell, the train passes a total of 19 impressive viaducts and 21 tunnels.
The “stairway to heaven”: The future of the Mariazell Railway
102 years after its electrification, the future of the Mariazell Railway started on September 5, 2013 with new carriages: the so-called “Himmelstreppe” which is German for “stairway to heaven”.
All nine trains in low-floor design are already operating on the route. The highlight are four panorama cars which commenced operation in June 2014. The windows of the panorama cars open up a fantastic view of the unique landscape.
The low floors and large entrances make the Himmelstreppe trains a modern and customer-focused means of transport. The modern interior and technological highlights such as the air conditioning or the passenger information system (including front camera view for the passenger system, stop displays, and tourist information) as well as power outlets for laptops etc. are additional features of the new trainsets.
Spacious multi-purpose compartments for bicycles, pushchairs, and mobility-impaired persons as well as generous luggage and suitcase storage facilities make traveling easy. The generously designed storage areas allow passengers to transport their bicycles comfortably. Security in the compartment is ensured via a passenger monitoring system with twelve cameras, video recording and emergency intercoms in every car section.
Nostalgia fans will take particular pleasure in the Ötscherbär adventure train that is running on Saturdays.
The famous steam locomotive Mh.6 travels on this route on specific dates – advance booking is required at www.noevog.at/tickets.
The TOP Youth Ticket available for pupils and apprentices is valid on the entire route of the Mariazell Railway!
